The Filming Style:

The production is planned to be shot in High Definition. It will blend documentary and dramatic styles to produce a motivational film having a similar photographic and story telling quality as “Touching the Void”. However, it will venture from "Touching the Void" as it will contain mostly original footage of the climb and "in the moment" interviews. Interviews with selected climbers and their families and Pakistani Americans will begin previous to departing for Pakistan. As the production progresses into the climb itself, footage of daily mountain life, climbing, and interviews will be captured of both the climbers, porters, and Pakistani villagers.  A small crew will remain in Pakistan for 10 days filming and interviewing the villagers affected by the Pakistani Earthquake. Upon return from Pakistan a final interview will be shot with climbers and their families and Pakistani Americans.

Synopsis:

The motivational quality of the film will stem from examining the goal of those climbing K2 and the roll climbing this mountain holds in their lives and the lives of the Pakistani villagers. It will then make a connection with the commonality of pursuing our dreams whether it's recovering from a natural disaster or a challenge we have chosen. The film will highlight the relationship between the climbers and the Pakistani villagers, exploring how their interactions impact each other along the journey.

The film will intertwine the climb with the recent tragedy these villagers have had to endure, and the organizations helping them through their struggles up the mountain of recovery. It will speak to the obstacles we face with friends and family as we pursue our dreams through to completion, the unpredictable situations we encounter along the way, the preparations and mindset necessary to achieve our dreams, and the triumphs and tragedies along the way.  Daring to Dream is about going after your purpose and dreams in life with the belief that you will make it happen because this is why you exist, and you realize that by doing this you will positively affect many along the way!

THE STORY:

A plane flying leaving Islamabad for Skardu contains 20 people who "Dare to Dream". They will be transported to Skardu and take a death defying bus ride to the end of the road. From there the K2 expedition crew; (consisting of 20 climbers and 300-400 porters) will transport 15,000 lb. of equipment for 10 days over the Baltoro Galcier to the base camp of Broad Peak (26,400ft, the world's 12th highest mountain). After climbing and acclimatizing on this mountain for approximately 20 days the team will adjust locations by traveling further up the Baltoro glacier to their point of anticipated challenge, the world's 2nd highest mountain, K2 (28,240). The expedition will spend nearly 30 days attempting to climb a mountain that has been summated by less than 250 people.
Historically, one in four who reach the summit of K2 (28,240ft) does not return. In comparison, Everest has been summited by over 2000 and holds a greater safety record.

This is an unprecedented trip. It will be the largest commercial group to ever attempt the summit of K2. It will also be the first time in history, a group this diverse in age, experience, talent, and fitness embarks upon this expedition. The team is made up of 8 Everest veterans, 1 K2 climber, recreational climbers from ages 23-62, cancer survivors, students, a doctor, lawyers, parents, construction workers, computer programmers, and a knife salesman! The male villagers, working as a support team, have their own interesting stories to be shared about their recovery from the earthquake in October 2005.   Both men and boys, fathers, sons, and grandfathers work side-by-side to help achieve their own dream of recovery after having lost villages, millions of homes, and 80,000 of their friends and family (many of which were school children and teachers) in the disaster. This is 50 times the number of lives and 21 times the number of homes lost during Katrina one month earlier.

The film will highlight the interaction between the climbers and the villagers of Pakistan as well as the struggles each is facing in achieving their separate goals. One group’s goal is to summit a physical mountain and another group's goal is to recover from a natural disaster. These ambitious climbers and villagers are not going to let traditional approaches stop them! Linked by a common dream, these strangers will work together to get as many of each group as possible to the summit of their goals and back home safely to tell their individual stories forever.

The film will explore how the tenacity of the human spirit continuously brings us through struggles whether sought out, such as the climb of K2, or the emotion rife of an unplanned disaster, such as the Pakistan Earthquake. It will show how a diverse group of individuals can greatly impact the success of one another by identifying and taking advantage of the skills they can offer each other. It will connect the commonality we have as humans of facing and overcoming obstacles.

By sharing the challenges the Pakistani villagers face through a motivational film about climbers achieving their dreams we are able create a product, which will reach and influence a larger segment of the population. The film's goal is to inspire people to step out and go after their dreams while positively affecting the people they meet along the way. The message is that by daring to dream we have a great affect on both ourselves and others around the world.
